LIBRARY OF THINGS IN SURREY OFFER A GREENER WAY TO GET THINGS DONE
Libraries of Things across Surrey are giving residents an easy way to borrow useful household items instead of buying new, helping people save money, reduce waste and support local climate action.
Now located in eight libraries and community spaces across the county, a Library of Things allows residents to borrow a wide range of items that are often expensive to buy, used only occasionally or difficult to store at home, offering a convenient and affordable alternative to ownership.
Libraries of Things are becoming an increasingly popular feature of communities across Surrey, within libraries in Cranleigh, Dorking, Epsom and Ewell, Godalming, Guildford, Haslemere, Redhill and Woking.
Each Library of Things is delivered in partnership with local charities, community groups and organisations, whose support and expertise help ensure services reflect local needs and priorities.
Together, these locations form a countywide network that supports community sharing, helps residents save money and contributes to Surrey’s wider environmental and sustainability ambitions.
Catalogues vary by location, but many offer access to DIY tools, gardening equipment, kitchen items, leisure equipment and other household essentials. All items can be browsed and booked online, making it easy for residents to find what they need when they need it.
Borrowing is straightforward, affordable and flexible, whether residents are tackling a home project, trying out a new hobby or preparing for a one‑off event.
Councillor Mark Nuti, Surrey County Council Cabinet Member for Health and Communities said: “Libraries of Things are a brilliant example of how we can help residents save money while also doing the right thing for the environment. They also show the power of working with local charities and community organisations to deliver practical services that really make a difference to people’s everyday lives.
“By sharing resources locally, we’re reducing waste, supporting our communities and making sustainable choices more accessible to everyone across Surrey.”
