FREE HOME SAFETY CHECKS FOR VULNERABLE SURREY RESIDENTS
Surrey Fire and Rescue Service, in partnership with NHS Surrey Heartlands, is offering free Home Safety Checks to help reduce the risk of falls, fire hazards, and cold homes among older or more vulnerable people.
The checks are being delivered by Ellie Hayes, a trained Home Safety Check Advisor from the SFRS, who works closely with local GP practices to support those most at risk.
During each home visit, Ellie offers friendly advice, identifies potential fire and fall risks, and fits free safety equipment where needed — all with the aim of helping people stay safe, well, and independent in their homes.
The service is available to residents who are registered with GP practices in Godalming, Haslemere, Cranleigh, Guildford, and surrounding areas.
Ellie said, “Many people don’t realise how small changes in the home can make a big difference. A loose rug, an overloaded socket, or even poor lighting can put someone at risk of injury or fire. These checks are about prevention and peace of mind — and I’m here to help people feel safer and more confident in their own homes. If you have an elderly relative, neighbour, or even think you might benefit from a visit yourself, don’t hesitate to get in touch — we’re here to help.”
Professor Andrew Rhodes, Joint Chief Medical Officer at NHS Surrey Heartlands, said, “We’re really proud to be working with Surrey Fire and Rescue on this important initiative, which will help so many older people stay safe and well in their homes. Falls are the most common cause of injury related deaths in people over the age of 75 and in Surrey we have an increasing ageing population at risk. Prevention is one of our core ambitions as a health system and through prevention initiatives like this, we can preserve people’s independence, reduce admissions into our hospitals and minimise the risk of people needing long-term care.”
